Initial Certification in Psychiatry 

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for certification in Psychiatry, candidates must meet the criteria below:

  • Be a graduate of an AOA-accredited college of osteopathic medicine
  • Hold an unrestricted license to practice in a state or territory
  • Show evidence of conformity to the standards set forth in the Code of Ethics of the AOA
  • Have been a member in good standing of the AOA or the Canadian Osteopathic Association for the two (2) years immediately prior to date of certification
  • Satisfactorily complete a one (1) year internship in an AOA approved training program
  • Satisfactorily complete three (3) years of AOA approved training in psychiatry.  The trainng must include a minimum of two (2) years of general psychiatry, and the third year of training may be in a general psychiatry residency program or a child/adolescent psychiatry residency program.
  • Successfully sit for and pass all sections of the certification examination:  written; oral; and clinical

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit and file an application on a standard form provided by this Board, and must bear the signatures of two physicians as endorsements. The two endorsements must be made by any two of the following who have a personal knowledge of the applicant and the applicant’s work:

  • Hospital Chief of Staff
  • Residency Program Director
  • AOBNP or ABNP Certified Psychiatrist or Neurologist
  • Hospital Department Director
  • Hospital Vice President of Medical Affairs

The application shall include the following documentation:

A. Osteopathic Residents

  1. Graduation from an AOA-accredited college of osteopathic medicine.
  2. Satisfactory completion of an AOA-approved internship.
  3. A letter from the director of the residency program certifying that the applicant is within six (6) months of completion of residency program and that he/she is in good standing.

B. ACGME Residents

  1. Graduation from an AOA-accredited college of osteopathic medicine.
  2. Satisfactory completion of an AOA-approved internship.
  3. A letter from the director of the residency program certifying that the applicant is within six (6) months of completion of residency program and that he/she is in good standing.
  4. A letter from the American College of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists granting approval of the program as being complete.

C. The application may include letters of endorsement.

D. The applicant must be a member in good standing of the AOA.

E. The completed application shall be filed with the Secretary- Treasurer of this Board accompanied the required fee.

F. Upon successful completion of the written examination and AOA approval of residency training, the applicant is eligible for the oral/clinical portion of the examination.

G. The applicant for certification is required to practice the specialty as stated in the Regulations and Requirements of the Board. Except as otherwise stated by certification, a minimum of seventy-five percent (75%) of the total practice must be within the scope of the specialty.

H. All case records and case reports furnished by the applicant for certification to this Board, in support of the specialty training program, shall become the property of this Board.
