Osteopathic Continuous Certification (OCC)

Participation in OCC is required for all AOA diplomates with time-limited certifications (those certificates with expiration dates).

For those DOs with non-time-limited (non-dated, non-expiring) certifications, OCC participation is not required.  However, there remain requirements for maintaining your AOA board certification, including the following:

  • Maintaining a state license that is active and in good standing
  • Retaining AOA membership that is active and in good standing
  • Earning a minimum of 120 credits of CME within each 3-year membership cycle, which include 50 credits of specialty CME and 30 credits of face-to-face osteopathic educational programs (Category 1-A)

There are a number of reasons why you might want to voluntarily participate in OCC, particularly as it appears a number of states are considering the implementation of maintenance of licensure (MOL) requirements.  The Federation of State Medical Boards has recommended that physicians participating in OCC be deemed fully compliant with MOL.
