Certification of Added Qualifications in Addiction Medicine

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the Certification of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Addiction Medicine, candidates must meet the criteria below:

  • Hold AOBNP certification in general psychiatry or general neurology that is active and in good standing
  • Satisfactorily complete one (1) year of AOA training in addiction medicine, evidenced b a copy of the addiction medicine certificate and letter of recommendation from the program director
  • Substantiate satisfactory clincal competence in addiction medicine, provided by the program director of the addiction medicine training program
  • Successfully sit for and pass all sections of the written certification examination, which 

    consists of that medical care which applies to the common problems of addiction exhibited in patients of all ages. This is a three-hour written examination consisting of multiple-choice single answer questions taken from current literature, including journals, monographs, recent publication, and recognized texts.


Application Requirements
At the time of application, the applicant must submit the following to the Board:

  1. Completed application signed and dated by applicant
  1. Notarized passport-sized photo attached to the application
  1. Copy of current state medical license indicating expiration date
  1. Application fee in the form of a check
  1. Letters of recommendation from a DO or MD, who can attest to the applicant’s knowledge in addiction medicine.
  1. Copy of addiction medicine program certificate, documentation of addiction CME credits and copy of AOA Individual Activity Reports for practice years
